What Is Your Favorite Place to Fly?
Posted: 02 May 05 10:08 PM (N/A)

I recently discovered a field on the corner of Kenny Rd and Lane Ave that has excellent West Wind Exposure. There are two Baseball diamonds on the top and four soccer fields on the bottom of the hill. I rode the Land Board in both but had the most fun in the ball fields as they were clear of goal posts.

Ken,

Excellent work on the site. It's worked perfectly through registration, log in etc.

Favorite place to fly...Three Creeks Metro Park. I'm south of Broad on the East side so it's easy to get to. The youth soccer can be a challenge.

The site up north sounds good.

See you.

I would like to thank Mike for bringing out his 5M Cabrinha Access (A fun zippy little nukin wind machine) and his 12M Aero II (A beast even on short lines). I setup my 3.6M Ballistic foil and my Flysurfer Mastair 12M foil. The Ballistic saw more use due to the gusty conditions. Gusty conditions and large kites on land are a frightful combination. The Flysurfer only saw airtime because I wanted to tune the bridle and steering lines. I quickly realized the conditions were ill suited for such tasks. I wish my B5 had arrived, it was an ideal day for a mid size foil. The field was closed to baseball due to the recent rain, which meant we owned all four diamonds. Props to Katie, an honorary member and excellent first time Kite flier with the ballistic. What a way to celebrate national Kite Month. Mike said he will be heading out on the water in an upcoming trip to Michigan. I have also heard the waters around Ohio are reaching tolerable levels. A south wind would make Alum Creek ridable launching from the beach.

Ken,

Thanks for the note.

The field was excellent. Your prediction that the light posts would serve us well as backstops proved correct.

I'm glad you liked the 5 meter. It pulled me quite a bit on a big Naish School Board in my early "just getting up" days. It took a lot of kite movement but the trade off was safety.

Until Saturday I had never been carried aloft over ground. I learned a lot, that if I get lofted I want to land on nice squishy water.

I enjoyed seeing the landboard. You were handling it well. You are way braver than I.

All in all it was a good day. I hadn't had the kites up since Hatteras and I had holes in both leading edge bladders at the end of the season. It was my first shakedown on the seat harness too.

Things are in shape. We just need some warm water and right winds.

Nice to see all the members of KiteSurfOhio in attendance. Thanks for keeping the site in shape. I move that you be President of KiteSurfOhio.

I'll be in Cleveland this weekend. Hope to give the membership a report on Lake Erie kiters.

See You.

For South through West to North, Berliner Park is an excellent place to fly when the softball practice fields are not in use. There are several parking lot's with fields on either side. With enough snow you can ski right across the parking lots. The park is located just off Greenlawn Ave, it can be seen from interstate 71(to the West). Note: When parking Do Not Back you car in or you risk being propositioned by a "friendly" male. It is also not a good idea to park close to others who are backed in as they may approach you. A polite negative response usually sends them on to their next prospect. Rainbow colored kites are also ill advised at this location if you catch my meaning.

I have flown quite a bit at a field behind the Franklin County Fairgrounds.  It seems to work well with anything.  Found a good size soccer fields owned by Columbus Parks in hilliard as well. Haven't flown there yet.

Ken, get in touch next ime you guys are going out.

I have flown in Hilliard at two places. My favorite is Spindler sports complex. off of Spindler Rd, near Renner Rd (just north of Interstate 70). Take the Hilliard Rome Rd Exit (first) and turn left at the first light. Take Renner to Spindler and the park is about a mile up on the right. The south entrance is usually locked s use the north parking lot. There are very few obstacles once they move the soccer goals off for the year. Kite Skiing here is excellent in North or South wind. I have not flown at the fairground fields (or seen it yet) but that sounds cool if it is good in all wind conditions. Are there any trees to block the wind during summer, how often is it used for soccer?
