Why Kitesurf?

The sport of Kitesurfing was first introduced commercially around 2000 with 2 line wipika kites. As equipment improved over the next 3-4 years and 4 line kites began to be introduced it became more popular. This was the C kite era, where board control was paramount and allowed better management of kite power. In 2006 Best Kiteboarding introduced the Waroo, new kite design that was based on a flatter profile and bridle system known as the "Bow" or "SLE" (supported leading edge) kite. This change reduced some of the risks associated with C kites and made it far safer to learn for many people. Since 2006 we have seen many refinements in kite design in both SLE and C kite models. One of the main benefits has been an increase in depower and wind range. This allows you to own fewer kites and be able to cover a wider range of conditions with fewer kites.

So that still does not answer the question of Why Kitesurf?

The answer is simple, everyone has their own reason. For some it is the thrill of jumping high and soaring through the sky, for others it is the feeling of power they can harness, for some it is the technical tricks and for others it is the speed. There is no one right answer, it all depends on your personal preference. The common thread is the joy that you experience when everything falls into place.

Meet the Central Ohio Crew

Ron Woodyard - The father of Alum Creek kitesurfing. He was one of the original crew who pioneered kitesurfing on the lake and began the relationship with the park service. Due to his schedule, Ron get's more Water Time than any other human in central Ohio, the lucky guy.

Ken Claussen - aka KiteSurfingKen. Another of the original crew. After taking some lessons at Real Kiteboarding on OBX, he ran into Ron at Alum Creek. With the help of a Jet Ski (sitting idle in the garage for the last 3 years) Ron and Ken conquered inland kitesurfing at Alum Creek. There were those who said it couldn't be done, but we did not listen.

Steve Burkey - Originally a wind surfer, Steve has seen the light and crossed over to the dark side. After several years of watching Ron and Ken have fun in conditions that were not favorable to wind surfers, he caught the bug and began learning to kitesurf. While his skills have improved tremendously, you may want to seek cover if you see his bird overhead as it has a tendency to come swopping down to earth unexpectedly. ;)

Jim Sferra - Another wind surfing convert, Jim has improved his kite control and board skills over the past 2 years or so. He now enjoys the holy grail of kitesurfing, riding upwind.

Christian Donosso - On of our Brazilian brethren, he has shown some good improvement in his riding ability and can hold his own against many of the wind surfing converts. While still working on his Arial skills, he enjoys riding fast and hard.

If you do not see your name listed here yet, send Ken your info and it will be added. Pictures are welcome as well.

Our Goal

To provide a platform for wind enthusiasts to discuss their passion for the sports and share their experiences.
